The Albatros D1,D2,D3 and D5a was WWI fighters family flown by many top German aces.Use 1916-18.
Designed by Robert Thelen, R. Schubert and Gnädig in Albatros Flugzeugwerke used a paneled plywood semi-monocoque fuselage, was lighter and stronger than the fabric-skinned box-type fuselage then in common use, and being easier to give an aerodynamically clean shape.Powered by Mercedes D.III (160-180 hp) six-cylinder watercooled inline engine, became the most powerful fighter aircraft yet introduced by the German Empire.
