Edmonton is the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta. Located on the North Saskatchewan River, it is the center of the Edmonton Capital Region, which is surrounded by Central Alberta. The city forms part of the northern end of what Statistics Canada defines as the "Calgary–Edmonton Corridor"

Edmonton is a wealthy city, the processing, refining and distribution of oil, as well as the production of oil products, are Edmonton's main source of income. Oil and natural gas are distributed throughout the country, as well as exported to the United States, through oil and gas pipelines and trucks. The main petroleum products produced are gasoline and chemicals.

Tourism plays an increasingly important role in the city's economy. The presence of the largest historic park in the country, as well as the largest commercial center in North America - and previously in the world -, attracts tourists from all over Canada and the United States.

Paper and wood production, metal products and food are other important sources of Edmonton's income. Two daily newspapers serve the city, The Edmonton Journal and The Edmonton Sun as well as five television channels.
