LIH的起源可以追溯到1948年，当时购买了土地并修建了一条跑道。到1949年，提供的服务有限，航站楼仍在建设中。此后不久，工程竣工，航站楼于1950年1月投入使用。机场一开放，客运量就大幅飙升，超过了之前的估计。仅仅一年后，扩建该设施的计划就启动了。
到1955年，机场占地160英亩，包括一家餐厅、停车场、地面交通、改进的跑道、机库和照明。在接下来的几年里进行了一些补充和改进。
到1974年，随着乘客人数的不断增加，很明显，该设施的设备无法满足需求。此外，航空公司开始使用更大的飞机，导致单一跑道不足以满足要求。
1984年，一条新跑道投入使用；它的建成也标志着该设施现代化计划的开始，该计划很快就开始实施。
目前的航站楼是1987年专用的。升级还包括一个新的停车场、扩大的机场道路和现代化的公用事业系统。
如今，考爱岛机场占地879英亩，拥有航空母舰、通用航空、空中出租车和军事行动。每天约有8100名乘客使用该设施，其中大多数乘客通过美国航空、达美航空、联合航空、阿拉斯加航空、夏威夷航空、西南航空和西捷航空抵达。

This is an exceptional rendition of one of Hawaii’s most scenic airports. The level of detail is remarkable, with beautifully crafted terminals, custom ground textures, and authentic signage capturing the airport’s charm. The lush tropical surroundings are seamlessly integrated, creating an immersive approach and departure experience. Dynamic night lighting and animated ground vehicles add vibrancy, while optimized performance ensures smooth operation.

Again Northern Sky Studios delivered an absolutely stunning detailed recreation of an airport. In this case it is the wonderful airport Lihu'e in Kauai, that I personally know from several visits during various vacations. Since MSFS 2020 was published I was waiting several years hoping that especially Northern Sky Studios would select this airport for creation because just they everytime manage to really reproduce the whole charme of very special wonderful airports outside and inside and they delivered again. All terminal buildings are not only reproduced exactly but also recreated inside in all wonderful details. There remains very few to wish but: - the streets next to the airport's roundabout and the "Lihue Airport" sign should be modelled for much better texture quality instead of using air images. - Two shops inside are closed (gards closed) - it would be more beautiful if these where opened ...but this is critisizing on a very high level ;). So this airport is an absolute must-have for Hawaii-Lovers.
