This is a beautiful and sceneic gateway to the backcountry, with a highly detailed rendition of the airport, no small details overlooked. Includes the Coast Guard Base and an accurate rendition of the town. Modelled directly from pictures from the base. If you love to fly Alaska - this is a must have. Alaska airlines and Ravn Alaska Airlines are daily flights into and out of Kodiak, delivering the good that keep this community in business. Surrounded by millions of square miles of wilderness, this this the perfect starting point to any adventure, just be careful with the icing. Realworld Scenery strives to bring you the BEST scenery possible, to replace the default scenery with the most accurate scenery possible.
I'm afraid this looks like abandonware at the moment, and I can no longer recommend it. There are terrain issues around the runways. There is a lack of parking spaces available. For whatever reason, they only give you about 6 or 7 parking spots throughout the entire airport (should be over a dozen just in the Coast Guard area). They only give you 1 spot in the Coast Guard area, and no helipads in the entire airport. They had modeled the nice float plane parking area, but don't give you a parking spot there either. There's a missing light stand on the end of runway 8. The scenery has been out for nearly 3 years and has not received a single update. It's essentially their P3D scenery, ported over to MSFS and then left to rot.
I have never posted a review of custom scenery before but having served in the United States Coast Guard on Kodiak for 5 years, I thought it might be prudent. This scenery is about as accurate as one can get without being there. Right down to the accuracy of the Coast Guard Air Station emblem on the side of the hangers at the base. Everything is placed where it actually is. One might think that the ends of the runways next to the ocean are a bit odd-looking. That area is a built-up Rock wall and I think it is depicted rather well in the scenery. I appreciate the effort to make this scenery as accurate as possible and look forward many flights in and out of Kodiak
It's unfortunate that this hasn't been updated with any heliport spaces since the H135 came out a while ago. I'm hoping this gets a much needed update, especially the Coast Guard area which is pretty inaccurate compared to the real thing. There are also no ships, no open hangers and the dock area isn't represented from what I can tell. The elevation of the airport is incorrect which is especially noticeable at the breakwater around the extended runway and around the coast guard area which looks to be about a 50 foot drop from the deck to the water, which is not realistic.
To be honest I really like this scenery. It's situated on a beautiful spot on Kodiak Island, so default surroundings are already beautiful but the developer(s) did a nice job on the airport itself with it's realistic buildings and nice atmosphere. I hope they do more Alaskan airports. I already have Nome as well and that's lovely too, although the they could have included more surrounding area into the their scenery. but that's for an another review.
