Discover the challenges of flying one of the lesser-known yet successful airliners of the 1950's and 1960's, a Canadian-designed derivative of the Douglas DC-4,  powered by four of the famous Merlin engines.

History

Towards the end of WWII, Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA) and the Canadian government began looking for an airliner to meet Canada’s post-war air transportation needs. It was decided that the tried and tested Douglas DC-4 would fit the requirement, and a licence was obtained from Douglas to build the aircraft. It was also decided to incorporate some components from the newer DC-6, just then becomming available. Under the licence terms TCA would be allowed to decide the power plants to be used on this hybrid aircraft, and after much deliberation the Rolls-Royce Merlin 620 was chosen. License requirements from Douglas, who did not want the North Star to compete with their new DC-6, stipulated that the North Star be sold only to Commonwealth countries.

Design development began at Canadair in 1944, and was designated the DC-4M (M for Merlin). First flight was on July 15, 1946, in Montreal.

Fundamentally, the North Star had the Douglas DC-6 nose, landing gear and fuselage (shortened by 80 inches), DC-4 empennage, rear fuselage, flaps and wing tips, C-54 middle fuselage sections, wing centre- and outer-wing panels, cabin pressurization (where used), a standardized cockpit layout and a different electrical system.

71 North Stars were built, in three basic variations. Trans-Canada Airlines flew the DC-4M2, in several layouts and with different engine (Merlin 622, 722 and 724) and prop combinations. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) used the C-54GM variant which retained the C-54 fuselage and cargo doors, and later fitted with radar. BOAC, using their C-4 type specifications, ordered 22 aircraft, which they renamed the Argonaut, and which flew with the airline in locations around the world from 1949 to 1960. Trans-Canada Air Lines used the North Star until 1961, and the RCAF kept theirs until 1965.

One side-effect of using Merlins was that both TCA and BOAC received passenger complaints about engine noise, and as a result both companies developed 'crossover' exhaust systems to have the exhaust pipes exit on the side of the engine away from the passengers, which reduced noise to only 93-102 decibels. Still loud, if you consider that the level at which sustained exposure may result in hearing loss is 90 – 95 decibels!

In later service, the fast and reliable North Stars were used by other airlines, such as British Midland and Overseas Airways, and several other smaller private and military operators for passenger and cargo services. Final flights of the type overall were by private cargo companies in the early 1970’s.

Only one complete North Star still exists, an RCAF C-54GM, residing at the Canada Aviation Museum in Ottawa, Canada.

I'm running P3D v4.5 with an i7 and GTX1080. This is a great piece of scenery. Fabulous frame rates and lots of detail. I love the internal views of the terminal buildings. Good to find another developer competing with the big guys. I plan to see what else they have. Best airport on the west Mediterranean and great base for African destinations out of Europe.

Excellent scenery with lots of landmark buildings reproduced. Great performance under P3DV5. Higly competent and responsive support by developers. -
If I would wish one thing then possibly all the li-Long areas could be provided with 3D buildings rater than Photoscenery. -
But who knows, possibly developers are already working on that....

A really beautiful scenery which makes flying in and out of Tenerife South a real joy. The colouring of the terrain is really nice and the autogen around the airport with many hand placed buildings is superb. The addition of the sloped runway and also slope of the taxiways really adds a new level of immersion to the sim and just brings the airport to life. I deduct one star just because the autogen around the airport is beautifully done, but the autogen for the rest of the island is non-existent and this is a real shame. Overa-
ll I recommend the scenery!
REX 5 - WORLDWIDE AIRPORTS HD FSX P3D

The total amount of value you get out of this product is purely based on where you fly in your sim. I would highly recommend this product to anyone that flies to sceneries that are not available; for instance bush flying in Alaska. But if you are one that regularly flys airliners in Europe, I wouldn't recommend this as I think investing into single airport sceneries is more beneficial to your simming experience. To add, I was a tad disappointed in the options as I think REX 4 Texture direct does a better job at airport textures. Overall, it's an alright product but the way you perceive this product is going to be based on where you fly.

This scenery is of a good standard. However as with all the TechnoBrain sceneries, it is amongst the most expensive single airport sceneries out there and as such you would expect it to be top shelf quality. It certainly is not that! I selected runway 18R in the FMC and imagine my surprise when on finals (and wondering why "APPROACH" would not engage)I realise that 18R does not exist.

I am amazed by the shanghai city center especially the bund and pudong area, also with acceptable frame rate, whether flying from or landing either the Hongqiao or Pudong airport, now with the shanghai city skyline gives a lot of immersion

This is an UPDATE to my earlier review of 1st August 2020 - I have been contacted by the Developer to say that they have now added SODE Jetways for GSX users which is excellent! They also appear to have been having complaints about the scenery due to my review. I will state and reiterate again - YOUR RESULTS MAY VARY! But most if not ALL airport sceneries are layered ABOVE everything default (Layer 1 descending). So Adelaide could easily be layered at the top (1) and all should be well. But in doing this, on my system, much of the scenery disappeared! My advice is to install the product and allow it to add to the library and then test the scenery. If you do not see the treeline surrounding the airport or do not see the patchy, grassy airport environs and are greeted by a bland light brown tarmac, then this has happened to you! Just change the scenery layer and it should all be fine. Lee James - 05 AUG 2020
