Just Flight’s Tornado GR1 simulation is based on one of the most distinguished aircraft to have served with the Royal Air Force – ZA465 'Foxy Killer'. Having flown the most sorties of any of the Tornado fleet in the Gulf War, it was then assigned to the famous 617 'Dambusters' squadron before being preserved for posterity by the Imperial War Museum Duxford.

The Tornado GR1 is a tandem (twin seat) multi-role combat aircraft. Its primary role is high speed, low level ground attack, but it is also capable of long range, high altitude interception and ground attack. It can carry out these roles in any weather using a wide range of weapons, external stores and sensors, including a terrain following radar. The Tornado is fitted with cantilever shoulder wings with variable sweepback between 25° and 67°. Forward wing sweep provides take-off and landing capabilities at low speeds. For all other stages of flight the wings are manually swept in accordance with the desired Mach number and mission phase, thus providing the aircraft with a highly versatile operating envelope.

Following on from their award winning Canberra PR9 and L-1011 Tristar Professional, this highly detailed simulation of the Panavia Tornado GR1 was developed by Just Flight's in-house development team following comprehensive, hands-on research with the real-life ZA465 'Foxy Killer' at the Imperial War Museum Duxford.

I was skeptical about the modeling of this aircrafts high Mach speed capabilities from the start. After being dismissed out of hand by JF when I asked why these are so underpowered and max out at M1.29, I spent months researching the GR1. I found videos, books articles etc that included aircraft development records and gulf war pilots real world testimony that all state the GR1 absolutely should be able to achieve Mach 2plus easily above FL320. But these simulator versions cannot go any faster than M1.29 while clean and level. A “Overspeed” warning always pops up around M1.35 (when flying nearly straight down in full burn) which is just not accurate at all. Even the included manual and at least one of the aircraft selection details about a specific livery (MRCA PO2 XX946) state the aircrafts capabilities of flying well over Mach 2.+ above 32000 feet in level flight (flt 281 5/3/79), with a clean load. Yet these are not capable or even close to being able to fly as fast as they should! I expect more from JF. Other bugs I reported such as a crash when trying to load a flight with a flight plan, a interior light switch that causes the throttle for engine one to not move past 50% and others were confirmed by JF to being fixed in future updates, but not the low Mach speed limits. That said, the plane is still pretty and fun to fly low hugging the hillsides and clipping tree tops. All full load out specs add up, but not speeds while clean. So if flight model speed characteristics accuracy and consistency are important to you then skip this for now and wait to see if JF corrects the issues. As is this Tornado is little more than a low altitude dust devil.

After some very strange technical issues that amounted to a nice set of GR1s that could not turn right or pitch up, JustFlight sent me a replacement file to correct the problem. Only issue now is that when selecting “console” lights On the left throttle gets stuck at %50 max, while the right travels all the way from zero to max.so I just don’t turn on those lights. I’m not terribly bothered by this. The planes are truly decked out with what seems to be a full compliment of instruments including a variable ride terrain following capability. These are complex machines and the simulation shows it. Reading the manual definitely helped me learn to fly these magnificent birds. Not really a throttle up and fly kind of situation here, though with some previous experience flying other military aircraft of the same era the learning curve isn’t too steep. Loads of detail and switches to flip (better know what they do though) makes me feel like this is a top tier add on. When clean they can reach extreme speeds upwards of Mach 2+ and are realistically simulated to reduced speeds when loaded up. So unlike say the entry level Virtavia you cannot go max speed with a full load, and in case it’s not obvious that’s normal. Smooth frame rates in my experience with my Win10 3.2ghz i7 16GB ram Intel 630UHD integrated GPU with 128mb dedicated and the rest shared with the ram. No problem despite the minimums suggest a 1GB GRaphics card. A very cool addition to my virtual military history museum collection and anybody else’s.
