FLYING CHARACTERISTICS

SSW Harrier is a not conventional model, it can be considered both a wing-borne and a jet-borne aircraft model since it can take-off and land using wing-lift or using engine nozzle vectored thrust.

To implement such not conventional characteristics was a challenge but we believe to have obtained a  behaviour very close to real as witnessedby real pilots and real former Harrier pilots.

Transition flight from jet-borne to wing borne and viceversa is surprisingly smooth, all typical vertical or short types of takeoff and landings can be performed with a very high degree of realism

SSW Drag coefficient concept implementation:

As known FSX has several limitations, one of these is that is not expected a model can change his shape during the flight (except for flaps surfaces et similar), then there is no possibility to dynamically change the drag coefficent. The static drag coefficient is stored either on .air or aircraft.cfg file thas is read once when the model itself is loaded into memory and cannot be changed easily, or at least in a documented way. SSW has developed a C/C++ .dll module that overrides above limitations, from now on our models will have a single .air and a single aircraft.cfg, changing configuration in flight (ie: dropping weapons, tanks) will affect not only the weight, which is already possible, but also the drag coefficient. Since the module behaviour can be easily customized it is also applicable at any type of model.Another step to achieve the max realism possible.

 

WING-BORNE CHARACTERISTICS

Flight characteristics have been accurately reproduced, almost all flight conditions: conventional takeoff, climb, cruise, combat, descent and landing are very close to flight tests and performances tables.

The model has, like in the real plane, the SAAHS (Stability Augmentations And Holding System) that greatly enhances manouverability and departure resistance.

Flaps are handled by a computer controlled schedule, no flap lever is provided, like in the real airplane user can choose from 3 flap operation modes: CRUISE, AUTO an STO.

The RR 408 engine combat trust and JPT control have been reproduced.

 

JET-BORNE CHARACTERISTICS

All aspects of Harrier vectored thrust flight has been reproduced with an high grade of realism:

Water injection control, wet/dry RR 408 engine

Ground effect

Wind effect

LIDS (Lift Improuvment Device System)

Sideslip acceleration with RPS (Rudder pedal shaker) a system to warn the pilot of a sideslip condition

Computed and displayed hover weight based on air temp, altitude and gross weight, therefore computed fuel quantity permissible on board

Computed and dispaleyd STO parameters, nozzle STO stop angle, STO nozzle rotation speed, ground roll, etc.

To enhance the real feeling some random perturbations are injected on the three axes during the hover.

All of above systems assure an high degree of realism and a great smoothness in the transiction from jet-borne to wing-borne flight and vice versa.

This is outstanding! It made a HUGE difference in the level of realism on an already realistic landscape simulation. The MFSF2020 stock renderings are good, but this just elevates the whole experience. What a deal! Highly recommended.

Version 1.03. The flight model has increased significantly and the developer is very fast in responding to community wishes. So you can now open the window for instance and the visuals for the spraying has improved further. The aircraft is still difficult to fly, but that's just the case with tail draggers. I upgrade my review from 3 to 5. It is a lot of fun to fly.

Finally, a product that satisfies my need for a vintage aircraft. She sounds, feels and looks real. First, I was a bit skeptical reading a couple of negative reviews. However, for only 12Euros I took the risk. What a wonderful plane I've discovered! Be-
ing a pilot, airplane manufacturer and of course aviation enthusiast, I can tell you that you can rarely find such a product. The cockpit and the textures are almost photorealistic.-
The engine sound in particular must have been recorded from the original or a very similar powerplant, based on my personal experience as a frequent visitor of the British air shows and museums mainly in Duxford where you can hear quite similar sounds. Some say the cockpit sound muffled. That is true because you have to have at least a headphone on your ears. Otherwise, you would be deaf pretty soon by the unmuffled exhaust pipes less than a meter away. Moreover, you must have to wear it for the sake of radio communication as well. You can hear the sounds of the structure, the clicks of the switches and knobs, the wind noise as well when the big 900in3 engine is off. The pictures and the description clearly state that the plane is restored with more recent avionics and other up to date materials whilst continuing to maintain the vintage feeling. For me it is quite obvious in 2021 you couldn’t get into the blue with a single compass or other over 100 years old gear from 1916. Those upgrades are extending the usability of the aircraft. I really hope that realPhysics will create other excellent aircrafts such as this from the same era. I wholeheartedly recommend.

The exterior of the aircraft is very nice, so are the visual effects. Unfortunately it is almost unflyable. During takeoff it is very twitchy, but with a little practice it is at least flyable. During landing though:Even though the stallspeed is at 52kts (interestingly according to the cfg file it is the same for flaps up and full flaps) if you fly at 70kts and try to flare, the nose just drops down and even thoug the aircraft was trimmed perfektly for 70kts you have not remotely enough elevator authority to flare the aircraft. (even Version 1 was better in that regard). I hope this can be fixed, then the aircraft gets 5 stars from me. It is exactly what I was looking for. p.s. I have 13.000 real life hours, so I am pretty sure it is not my fault with the landings.

Again five stars and another, my third, excellent scenery package from this developer added to my library. This aiport is a challenging one because it has a curved approach and must be hand flown owing to the close proximity of Mount Etna. The airport charts/approach plates make for really good reading if you want to fly to this airport "by the book". Again not just the airport but the surrounding area is modelled to such a high degree which is most welcome. Ver-
y FPS friendly and I have not experienced any VAS/OOM/stutter issues when flying to this destination. -
Plus this workw very well with FSX:Steam Edition. Wor-
th every penny and I look forward to adding some more airport sceneries from this developer in the future.

If you have no idea where you should flight next, Pilots Life is a good add. However that's all it does and in my opinion there is a huge lack of immersion if we take into account the 20 Euros price tag. Hope Dev's keep working on it to make it better.
